Forum Down
Update: Hey guys, I'm still working on getting the forum up and running. Basically, our forum database is so large that I can't even access the files myself--I'm going to have to create my own server from my own laptop to run the forum from, which is going to take me some time. Hopefully everything will be fixed within a week or so. Sorry it's taking so long, cross your fingers.

The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming
|
|
|
AuthorTracker sent out a newsletter today about "The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming: A Christmas Story", by Lemony Snicket , and illustrated by Lisa Brown. According to the official description:
Latkes are potato pancakes served at Hanukkah, and Lemony Snicket is an alleged children’s author. For the first time in literary history, these two elements are combined in one book. A particularly irate latke is the star of The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming, but many other holiday icons appear and even speak: flashing colored lights, cane-shaped candy, a pine tree. Santa Claus is briefly discussed as well. The ending is happy, at least for some. People who are interested in any or all of these things will find this book so enjoyable it will feel as though Hanukkah were being celebrated for several years, rather than eight nights.
The book was released in the USA on October 28th, and in the UK on November 19th. You can order the book from Amazon.com by clicking here.
The newsletter also includes a link to this (non-ASoUE) holiday animation.

Win an entire signed ASoUE set!
|
|
|
UnfortunateEvents.com, the website of British ASoUE publisher Egmont, sent out a newsletter detailing a new contest:
"We find ourselves in the regrettable position of being in possession of a complete set of signed copies of 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'. How this situation befell us is too dreadful to recount at length but it involved a dangerous criminal, a box of matches, a magnetic chess set and a runaway goat."
Click here to enter the contest. Once you have answered the question, you must enter your name, e-mail address, and postal address. The contest ends January 2nd 2008.
Remember that: Entrants must be UK residents only. Parental permission for anyone under the age of 16 is required for entry into the draw.

In an interview on MuchMusic.com, Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell of the Canadian band Stars reveal how Daniel Handler has written a story that will be published in the the liner notes of their new album "In Our Bedroom after the War". Additionally, Daniel Handler also plays the accordion in the song "Barricade" (on the same album). Campbell has said that Daniel Handler and himself are "the Bobbsey twins of musical taste".

Horseradish in the UK
|
|
|
"Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can't Avoid" was released in the United Kingdom today (it was released in April in the United States)
Life is a turbulent journey, fraught with confusion, heartbreak, and inconvenience. This book will not help. Many collections slap together the wit and wisdom of certain authors in the hopes of inspiring a reader at a crucial time in his or her life. This book contains a bouquet of alarming but inescapable truths from the work of Lemony Snicket, along with selections from his unpublished papers and remarks he has made at dinner parties and anarchist riots, in order to remind the reader that even the loftiest of inspirations contains a sharp, bitter kernel of dread - and vice versa. .
Also, tomorrow (September 4), The Wide Window, or Disappearance! will be released. Disappearance is the paperback version of the Wide Window, with "extra stories and extra art for no extra cents"

New AuthorTracker: The Paperback Editions
|
|
|
A new ASoUE newsletter was sent out today, reading:
Are you made fainthearted by the work of Lemony Snicket? Does the thought of strange new siblings unnerve you?
How about CRUDE ANIMATION?
Your answers likely reveal the following brief video to be ill-suited for your personal use.
The link provided leads to a video which turns out to be a short advertisement for the paperback editions of ASoUE.

21 Answers from Lemony Snicket!
|
|
|
They're here! Daniel Handler/Lemony Snicket has answered the 21 questions posed by ASoUE Fans (see the post below this for more details). You can read all 21 answers here.
My personal favorites:
1. Captain Widdershins's personal philosophy was "He who hesitates is lost." What is your personal philosophy? - Libitina
“Never refuse a breath mint.”
9. If an apple a day keeps the doctor away then what fruit would best keep away persistent realtors? Would you suggest something heavy like a watermelon or something easy to throw like a grapefruit? - Charlotte
The durian is a fruit produced by a plant pollinated by flies. To attract its pollinators the flowers of the plant smell like rotten meat. You can imagine how dreadful the fruit smells, particularly if ripe and damp. In many countries where the durian is available it is illegal to carry it onto public transportation. I once had a piece of candied durian and it still felt like a zombie meal. I imagine having durians around the house would cause property values to plummet, and realtors would no longer be interested.
Daniel Handler also hinted at possible future ASoUE books:
11. What was the darkest hour in the lives of the Baudelaire orphans? Please keep in mind that "darkest" here means "most woeful," not "lacking in light," and hour is not a literal measurement of time in this case. - Philip Jucker
I suspect their most woeful hour is yet to come.
13. Will information on the sugar bowl, the Great Unknown, what became of the Quagmires, the fate of the Baudelaires, or even the truth behind V.F.D. ever be disclosed, or is it left up to the readers to draw their own conclusions? Do you know all of the answers? - Dupin
If readers draw their own conclusions and speak of such conclusions out loud, then this information will indeed be disclosed; otherwise one might wait for more Snicket books, which would likely contain shrouded answers and further frustrations.

|
A special message from 667 Dark Avenue
In honor of 667 Dark Avenue's Fifth Anniversary (June 22), the forum has been granted a rare opportunity to communicate with Lemony Snicket himself. Mr. Snicket and his legal representative, Daniel Handler, have agreed to answer twenty-one questions posted by the members of 667. In order to create the most clever and compelling questionnaire possible, we hope the entire online community of Unfortunate Events fans will contribute by submitting their best question at Dark Avenue.
Each registered user of 667 Dark Avenue is entitled to submit one question. Twenty winning questions will be referred to Daniel Handler, and the best question of all will make its way to Lemony Snicket. We will be considering questions from now through Monday, June 25. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Handler and Mr. Snicket's answers will be posted on 667 Dark Avenue, and the one lucky winner will receive a hand-written reply to his or her question by Mr. Snicket himself. Consolation prizes will be sent to the writers of the other winning questions.
In addition, we have set up many challenges and festivities in honor of A Series of Unfortunate Events . Fabulous prizes will be given to contest winners, including a first edition copy of The Bad Beginning, signed copies of The Grim Grotto, bookplates stamped and dated by Lemony Snicket, and much more. Our contests are designed to reward the most talented and devoted fans. Submissions will be accepted through the weekend.
The contests open on the listed date; they will close on Sunday evening, June 24. Please submit your entries before that date.
The contests and the 21 Questions thread can be found here.
